Unbelievable we need a law to let parents parent. When I was a kid, we didn't just leave the house when we got up, we were basically kicked out and were told to go play, after chores were done of course. We would show back up at lunch then back out again...when we started smelling supper at all the houses we would go home and start allover again the next day. We walked to school because "it was good for us." We had dirt clod, bottle rocket, BB gun, and and rock wars. Learned to ride a bicycle the hard way by going to the top of the hill and getting on it and riding it down and learning to brake or running into the creek and doing it until we got it right...pain is a great motivator. Went to the community pool and cooled off. We all drank from the same water hose and coke bottle...guess what we had bruises, broken bones, scratches and skin "strawberries" but shot someone's eye out, got whooped when we needed it and not necessarily by our own parents...here's a little secret...WE SURVIVED. My life was basically like the movie the sandlot...ALL WITHOUT PARENTAL SUPERVISION. And guess what, I raised my daughter the same way and she turned out ok. I don't need the government to tell me how to parent.

Absolutely Crazy! On weekends and summer vacation we left the house in the morning, came back for lunch, came back for dinner, and came back when it got dark. Other than that our parents generally didn't see us.
I would be willing to say this craziness is more of the current urban mindset than rural (where I grew up).
