Here is an update for you on this: WEAK IMPACT: As expected, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 31st (00:30 UT). The impact, however, was weak and did not produce a geomagnetic storm. Auroras are still possible in the hours ahead as Earth moves through the CME's turbulent wake, but so far this has not been a significant space weather event. Aurora alerts: text or voice

spent 2 weeks in northern Finland (2 hours north of arctic circle) last Christmas and didn't see one thing. Now you tell me some guy in East Kazakhstan might see it.

COL Jeff Williams Hopefully you'll get to try that again. I'm sure it would have been a wonderful experience to see. Sorry about the guy in East Kazakhstan beating you out.... Wouldn't it be nice if we could control natural phenonemon and direct it to our own time tables?.
