The problem being there are inadequate amounts of Mental Health professionals in the VA to care for the large number of those with mental illnesses. Instead, pills are provided to try and put a Bandaid over a gaping wound. There ARE a lot of side effects with many of them, but they are being prescribed by general practitioners who are told it's okay to do so to help the over stressed system. When Veterans are sent out to the civilian community, many times those Mental Health professionals don't really understand the ramifications of PTSD and TBIs involved with military personnel. Before there were such medications, the soldier/sailor/Marine/Airman was told to man up and deal with it. It's not a good situation and never has been.
