A commoner who was promoted by merit to the highest positions in the Mongol Army. He had no communications beyond dispatch riders, and kept all the details in his head as he was illiterate. From the article-

He was fantastic. A couple of times he was the first man up on the walls when besieging cities. He was a stone badass, for sure.
