I am not a fan of unions anymore. They were needed at one time but now some of them have gotten out of hand. I do agree with you on one point though. If someone doesn't join the workers union then they should pay for their own representation...period. That is only right and fair. BUT I don't believe that Government workers should be allowed to have unions.
Now one of the reasons I have a disdain for unions is that I was a supervisor in a union plant for a year. The plant normally closes on Sat and Sunday unless production is way down. We were told one particular Wed that we would be working on Sat (had to notify union 4 days in advance). On Friday my boss the plant manager told me we had to get a specific shipment out the door or we would lose a major client. I ran the QC line and distribution for this particular client. So Saturday I get to work and the order that I needed to inspect and ship was still at the main plant. I grabbed one of my guys that was bobtail certified and said follow me to the plan and lets get these products and bring them over here since they didn't do it last night like they were supposed to do...remember had to get the shipment out...they wouldn't do it. So I drove the dang truck over there, they loaded it, came back and unloaded it, we QC''d it and by the hairs on our chin we got the order out and saved the clients account who by the way was Titleist and we were making golfshafts. On Monday when I came in I was told to report to the HR office. I did and got an ass chewing like no other because I didn't call the warehouse person in to drive the truck for 30 minutes. It would have cost me 2 hours of production time to wait on him. They ended up paying him for four hours of work when he didn't even come in. the plant manager told me thanks for getting the order out but not to let that happen again when the production folks didn't do their job of getting it to us. I talked to the warehouse man that they would have called in and he said that he got four hours of overtime and threw it in my face. I said well, if I call you in and need you next time you will work the full four hours sweeping this warehouse form end to end...getting paid for four you are going to work for four. You see, I found out it was a union setup...they intentionally left the shafts at the production facility so we wouldn't have them and someone would be called in for overtime. that kind of bullshit is what has turned me off from unions....several other things have happened as well like having to call someone in to switch out an electrical wire when I had a qualified industrial mechanic on duty that could do the job...the qualified guy wouldn't touch it because he wasn't the senior guy and it "wasn't his job."
