Susan Collins: Another round of military base closures ‘does not make sense’

It's funny how every single military installation, no matter where it is or what it is used for, is absolutely vital to the national defense of the US, in the eyes of that states congressional delegation. The other states' installations, not so much.

It's also funny how you constantly hear republicans say that the US government can't create jobs, until you say you want to close a facility, then it's all about the jobs that will be lost.

With respect to those...not navy...who have responded, During my time in service (76-97) and my time spent working civil service (98-present) I have seen "navy" base after base shut down with ships & squadrons relocating to other bases, already crowded from previous closings, locating our eggs in one basket. Shipyards down from 3 capable of building nuclear carriers down to ONE...retarded, especially with the age of some of our carriers. These closures have pushed rehab/upkeep/modernization efforts of our fleet WAY beyond 2025 with an ever increasing cost. I agree that places (recreation centers, like that mentioned in WA and Great Pond rec area in Eastern Maine should suffer closure first...think about it.

How many bases do you know of that are not mission essential?

My vote is for "Pacific Beach", WA. It is a ? Recreational? center. Lodging and motor home spaces are available. My three nights there in 2002 left a lasting negative impression!
