Smoking and the military has been around since the beginning of time. It is like tattoos, it has also been around equally as long. There was a backlash when there was a movement to change DoD policies on tattoos. Cigarettes and Tobacco products are no different.

The following is my opinion based on my own observations: One of the downsides to the recent indoors smoking bans, was the re-enforcement of smoking as a social activity. When I first got to my Nat. Guard company, the smoke pit was the place to be. It was the only place a guy could hang out regardless of rank. There was significant social pressure to smoke, even though I never saw somebody openly encourage anybody to smoke cigarettes. By the time I left, my platoon sergeant vaped instead of smoking, and a number of other soldiers were as well. Because soldiers would vape when they felt the urge rather than congregating in a designated smoking area, it removed the social aspect of smoking, and seemed to dramatically reduce the number of smokers. I could be drawing entirely incorrect conclusions, but that's my observation on vaping.

SSgt Josiah Brainard That's the pattern I also see at my shop. It's more convenient for work because nobody smells like a pile of ashtrays and it can be done indoors at home without disturbing apartment tenants or neighbors. I don't condone starting vaping but it does help tremendously with quitting. The MSM concentrates on batteries blowing up but they fail to realise is those are cheap Chinese knockoffs that draw to much power from the batteries and cause them to blow

Tough topic! E's have some benefits. Kids will try a lot of stuff not knowing the draw backs.

LTC Greg Henning, I agree, kids try things without thinking. However, the way the article reads to me is the writer tries to pull the old "would somebody please think of the children" line and in doing so, there are NO benefits to vaping. None of the MSM has done any success pieces on how vaping help people quit. I'm on my last month of vaping. Over the last year, I reduced the amount of nicotine every few months to almost nothing since I've become so dependent on it over the years. I'll be quitting cold turkey 1 March.
