Never experienced anything like these. I can see how they may make you feel like you are a part of something as you have a shared experience. But as you say some take it overboard.

I have never really had a problem with hazing as long as it was not criminal in its practice...the effects of hazing are significant to military personnel as those subjected to the hazing are quickly recognized as to their character by how they react....overreaction probably would warrant more hazing and continued efforts to "break" the individual....those that sloughed it off and determined ways to avoid the rancor of those in charge were probably the individuals that you could rely on to perform well under combat and find quick and workable solutions to defeat the enemy....being hazed in a "friendly" environment and surviving is a stepping stone to dealing with the unknown in a combat situation....
