No way. Proud member of the 9.9%. Raised on welfare because my mother was ill. Joined the reserves for money for college and between that and some student loans became an engineer. Secrets to joining the upper middle class are below.
1. Pay attention in class. Graduate high school. The odds of you being successful wihout graduating high school are practically non existent in today’s society.
2. Do not have children out of wedlock. Kids are expensive and will decrease your odd of success if you have them too early in life.
3. Do not break laws. Having a criminal record will have a huge negative impact on your future earning potential.
4. Attend some kind of trade school or college for a meaningful degree that you can earn money with. You might really be interested in medieval history but it will not qualify you for a decent career. That is a hobby degree you can get online after getting your career degree. Don’t overlook skilled trades. The electricians where I work make over $35/hr straight time and get all the overtime they want.
5. Don’t overlook opportunities that come your way because you think you are too good for it. You’re not. That may mean joining the military to get money to attend school.

I always liked the saying, the harder I worked, the luckier I got. My early years were even worse than yours and now, in retirement, my income is even higher than when I was working. Your list is good, but I found the desire to succeed and trying to be better at your job than anyone else before you helps. Military and civilian life.
