Many of the Marines who participated in the battle for Iwo Jima trained at Camp Pendleton in California. A private group is now attempting to raise funds to bring a copy of the iconic raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi to Camp Pendleton.
I've attended two luncheons to help support their effort and had the amazing good fortune to sit and eat with veterans of that battle. It was one of the greatest honors of my life.
