The culmination of wars is often the result of attrition to requisite resources to continue fighting in the war. The Germans faced severe attrition to its experienced Luftwaffe pilots. The conclusion to this attrition is the inexperienced Luftwaffe pilots were easier to shoot down thus the Allied Air Forces gained air superiority in the European Campaign.
The Germans faced a severe shortage of fuel, and a huge mechanized army needs a lot of fuel. The German plan was hoping to requisition Allied fuel by conquest, but they were incapable of performing this task. Therefore, when the German Army ran out of fuel, most of the soldiers got out of their vehicles and started to walk home. The military lesson learned is hope is not a good tactic.
The 101st Infantry Division was outgunned by the Germans, but it made its stand in Bastogne. They were able to accomplish this because they were some mean and tough SOBs.
