It's gone down as one of the worst "blunders" in military history... but you gotta hand it to those fine bloody fellows; they dang near took the position anyway out of sheer audacity. Horses must have been much stronger back then, just to carry the weight of those huge, brass... e-hem; you get the idea.

Cannons to the left of me, cannons to the right...

The charge itself was made by mistake, but it was damned gallant what they did.

I'm sorry but I don't get my details on history from English Literature.
How about we stick to the facts.
I know that Wikipedia is not a definitive source, but try this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Balaclava
Look up the Battle of Balaclava

Maj. Hamilton, I wholeheartedly agree that there are better sources of detailed information on a field of battle than a poet's words. But this site allows us to share all types of sources. Maybe that's the point you are making. I get it. Most of those born America today would struggle to read a single chapter of a Tolstoy Novel or even name a moment in American military history, but many would recognize the words of this poem because we are inspired by the poets words or some situation modern media made into their memory of history with those words. Some like me are inspired not just by history of words, but served because I was inspired by words of prose. But a passage made famous in the HBO series Band of Brothers, was already famous long before there was TV. That passage was from Shakespeare's play Henry V is set in a camp before the Battle of Agincourt about facing mortality in an uneven battle during the invasion of France that brought victory from the jaws of defeat.

The point is to understand history and relate it to our lives. We try to preserve it. We strive to inspire others with it. We struggle to educate others with lessons. We entertain each other by being good story tellers.

Today is Saint Crispin's Day. It falls on 25 October and is the feast day of the Christian saints Crispin and Crispinian (also known as Crispinus and Crispianus, though this spelling has fallen out of favour), twins who were martyred c. 286.
