The author of the article thinks of a swarm as something apparently much more expensive ($28000 per drone) than I would be expecting. He also seems to envision swarms of drones taking off and flying to the objective like aircraft. I think of an autonomous swarm as a collection of much less expensive, simpler systems of fairly small size (at least smaller than an MRE, preferably smaller than an orange), delivered by artillery projectile or cruise missile.

We can't define away the problem as a Swarm with current aircraft capability. We need to define it as what is foreseeable, probable capability and what would be the inventions or breakthroughs that would make the technology viable and deadly.
Batteries are a significant limitation but batteries combined with solar and other energy capture mechanism can bring in the idea that a swarm may be capable of long distances but not fast.
Fast drones traveling on a scramjet at hypersonic speeds become a threat just based on kinetic energy alone w/o a war head, but they may lose mobility.
Triple AAA is not plan when you are protecting a critical asset from a Swarm attack, is a untested hope.
