When the U.S. entered WWI in 1917 it had to play catch up in developing this new armored vehicle that was already being used by the French and English. In fact, the U.S. relied on the Allies to provide them with tanks to train with and use in battle until the U.S. could start producing its own. Only one of the French FT-17 Renault lights tanks that was used by Americans still exists and it was just installed in the National Museum of the U.S. Army (http://www.armyhistory.org.)

Fascinating read. As for the tank commander communicating with the driver by kicking him, I suddenly feel that modern armored vehicles aren't so bad after all in that department.

My TC used "foot signals" from time to time, when I was the gunner, in the M-48A5 in the 80s. Crude, but effective.

I was in M113A3's. Best I could do was "belly up" out of the turret & whack my driver across the back of the head if I had to; couldn't reach him with my foot.

The FT-17 was way ahead of the curve in it's day. Up until just a few years back, there was an FT-17 hull working up here in the northwest. I've seen pictures of it, but can't remember if it was in OR or WA.

I remember being taught about the Allied Powers and their role with assisting the US in WW1,as well as, the roll of the Axis Powers. But, education does not teach these facts to our rising generations.
