There is a decent chance that two great aunts and a great uncle of mine were on this vessel.
They lived not far away from Memel, and disappeared about the same time, never to be found. All were in the early teens at the time.
It is more likely that they simply got swallowed up in orgy of destruction the Red Army brought with them, but when I first heard the story of this disaster, it felt... real.

Wow great peice of history that I didn't know about. That was such a tragedy that the Russian navy would sink a civilian oceanliner and killing thousands of innocent people.

Technically it had been repurposed as a troop ship and floating Kriegsmarine training school. it was a legitimate target. What the Russians couldn't know was that it was full of German civilians.
