Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding the article (I hope I am), but what I'm getting from it is that white people are racist and afraid of losing their place in society. Is that about right?

I see that as an oversimplification of the issues presented, Structural economic discrimination, lack of opportunity, lack of social support mechanisms were a big factor. Yes, racism plays a part, but it is more class discrimination.
