Nothing new, the school I used to teach at installed 6 700 ft deep holes and ran a bundle of lines down each to extract heat using fluids that would conduct the heat back to the surface where an exchanger took the heat pumped into the building and sent the cooled fluids back down, it was not cheap. There is a guy in South Carolina that spent 3 million on his home to be totally off the grid, between geo thermal heat and cooling plus solar. At the article stated the cost is not affordable to all yet.
