Well, the 18th Century was a rough time to be alive in for anyone (just ask the Scots at Culloden). Still, I'm going to defend the Admiral...sounds to me like he was an officer more aware of the risks to his men then filled with ambition. It's impossible to say if he was truly over-cautious, or just unlucky not to have been handed an opportunity to demonstrate any existing competency...but one should never lose their life for refusing to waste others'. Personally, I'd like to think I would have ripped off the blindfold, stood facing the line, and shouted the order to fire myself... then again, perhaps I'd have soiled myself. We just never know till we know.
