At one time it was considered cowardly and ungentlemanly to fight from fortified defensive positions, but the Civil War found armies digging in, as they could engage further than the enemy can maneuver safely. WWI proved to be a carryover from Civil War, but the weapons improved dramatically. After WWI the Germans conducted an institutional AAR. What was intended - offensive maneuver, what really happened - many soldiers were lost during an offensive maneuver. The Germans designed new doctrine and tactics to shrink the delta, with heavy armor, combined arms, and blitzkrieg.
