Twice in eight years Mongolia has succumb to IMF bailouts. However, with copper and coal prices recovering somewhat, Mongolia’s prospects should improve. Its economy will also benefit from heavy investment in the Rio Tinto-operated copper mine, Oyu Tolgoi. Meanwhile, if Mongolia fails to manage its next commodity cycle better, it may find its benefactors’ patience baikhgui – Mongolian for “absent” or “unavailable”.

Thank you for posting I just learned something about Mongolian economy. Now all I need is for someone to bring that up in conversation. On a side note, the last time I was in Bejing, my tour guide was a Mongolian illegally in China. Apparently, working as a tour guide and dealing with the Chinese version of ICE was a better option than staying in Mongolia.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell - I'm glad you shared that tidbit. Since I've been learning about Mongolia, I'm constantly seeing the term 'ger' or 'gur' to identify the homes in which Mongolians dwell in the steppes. And I think you just taught me how to pronounce the term – Yurt.
