MSgt George Cater I think the civilian population underestimates the importance of getting this one simple piece of equipment right! With certain exceptions, no one spends as much time in boots as the military and the environment/conditions coupled with the diversity of activities required by the military make this an absolutely essential item to get right!

You are spot on. At the start of Iraqi Freedom the Army issued a bunch of desert boots that were significantly subpar. After the first two months so many of the soldiers in my unit had foot problems and the soles were excessively worn. I think the Army was just in a rush to field them. The climate probably had something to do with it too. My feet swelled in them I ended up cutting the stitching on them. Some people just wore their black boots.

Let all recruits in the different branches of the military test them out. They'll be as tough on them as a service member.

That I totally agree on. I guess Gen Neller doesn't trust the DOD development process and the Army would never adopt a Marine developed item.
