I knew from day 1 of my Army Career that I was not going to be the Chief of Staff of the Army, nor the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, nor even a Division Commander. I was 90% certain I would not be a GO. I was only tangentially believing I would make it to O5. Why? It wasn't because there was an insidious plot to keep red headed people down, rather I wasn't Combat Arms.

Until recently we didn't even have a logistician above the two star level. AMC was usually a combat arms officer.

Combat arms will always be the dominant culture of the Army, as we are an organization that values decisive battle in ground combat. It would make sense that this enterprise would be led by those that have proven themselves in leading ground combat. It is not unlike the fighter pilot dominant culture of the US Air Force. But here is the upside. Now every officer can apply to Commission as infantryman, Tanker, Artilleryman, or Combat Engineer. Even Steven, everyone will have equal opportunity to have their dreams dashed. We are not entitled to anything.

It does my heart good to see Marines as chairmen of the JCS.

But what i REALLY want to see is a Special Operator in that position.

We need to break a few molds.

IMHO, they should be men that soldiers would want to follow, and that make their people above and below them look good.
