The Washington Post is over the top again! I am sure that there are some so called Dreamers who are serving in a useful and productive manner. However, the US Department of Defense is not structured or maintained by some 900 individuals who have chosen to serve. They are on a path to citizenship and that is a good thing. But the Post wants us to believe that without these people the DoD stops functioning. They have language skills... great we also have the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA where we train linguists. They might be interrogated by the Russians or Chinese... If knowing the internal structure and operations of a BCT rifle range or how to drive a 5-ton cargo truck is of strategic importance then we should insure our secrets are safe by never letting these folks ETS. "The new Pentagon regulations also have prohibited Dirgantara from reporting to basic training until the background investigation is complete, even though he now serves in uniform." Seems a prudent move given the current situation and recent past performance of service members who have failed to live up to full responsibilities and have expressed support and actions for terrorist groups. A lawyer, interviewed by the Post stated: " By definition, DACA recipients are a prescreened pool of people of a higher quality than the average recruit,” Stock said. “They have no criminal background and graduated from high school. And they’re highly motivated to join the military because it’s their only option to stay in the country.” I thought that all enlistees these days had to meet the same criteria, no criminal record and high school graduation and; there does not appear to be a shortage of enlistments so how does this make a DACA "higher quality" than a US citizen? Sorry, just not seeing it! The article goes on to say: "Dirgantara, who has spent more than half his life in the United States, is trying to keep busy in his civilian job as a chef while gearing up to watch his beloved Philadelphia Eagles take on the Washington Redskins on Sunday." The only thing they forgot to say is that every day Dirgantara bakes an apple pie and waves the American flag at all Eagles games.
The real issue here is Congress. They need to fix this and all attention, political and social pressure needs to be on them to fix this. This should not be left to DoD to fix. It is another distraction when they should be laser focused on ISIS, North Korea and Syria. The senior senator from AZ has publicly stated that the Congress is not subordinate to the President... they are equal branches of the government... so its now time to exercise the leadership of a co-equal and get this DACA bill on the desk of the President... and please stop all the whining.
