We take the ability to relieve ourselves, as needed, and when needed, for granted, but pilots can't just stop at the nearest convenience-store or rest-area, and with in-flight-refueling, their range is virtually unlimited. Another option, catherization, while usable, would not be an attractive option for people who don't need it otherwise. Catheterization would introduce the risk of urinary-tract-infections.

I have to wonder what has taken them so long...

Interesting, holding urine to long can cause painful bladder spasms and, if all the “plumbing “ isn’t ok kidney damage. I wish the designers success.
