You know, when facing annihilation of all mankind, I’d think a lot of people would volunteer to serve. I have to admit that I watched the movie for all the sci-fi and action scenes. The sequels actually showed more of the fascism inherent in the future.
Interesting article, though.

I have one suggestion for the author of this opinion piece; read the damn book that the movie is based on. Then perhaps you’ll have a better understanding of the plot and backstory. It’s not fascism or communism, it’s utopian democratic socialism. You have a Democracy but you had to serve in order to earn full citizenship privileges. Civilians when you look at Rico’s parents were very well off financially and socially but neither served. So obviously one didn’t have to serve in the military to have kids. If you haven’t read the original book I highly recommend it. A 1950s look at socialism where government believed one has to be willing to sacrifice for the nation state to receive full citizenship benefits from the nation state. Imagine every politician understood sacrifice. Imagine the wealthy also had to serve in some capacity to get full benefits. Oh and Federal Service is still voluntary but now civilians have incentive to serve. Utopia is true science fiction.

Wow, I never really looked at this movie that way when I saw it waaay back then. I was just looking at a hot chick in a shower.

After reading this article and imagining the movie, I see exactly what the writer meant, scary to think we could actually go so far down that road.

Recommend reading the original 1950s book this movie is based on. It’s not fascism but socialism.
