Poor Turkey...they had at a chance at a relatively bloodless revolt last year...but they blew it. Now it will take a full fledged Revolution to save themselves from the Islamists. I'm not sure they have it in them, but even if they do, the death toll will be enormous.

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint I appreciate their look back at the Ottoman Empire. Makes one wonder exactly who Erdogan is aligned with, given the volatility of the areas south of Turkey that were part of the old Ottoman.
It appears that he (Erdogan) may have found the modern way to install a dictatorship - mask it under a true election, not a forced/fixed one. I know that the US military is strongly considering pulling out of all bases in Turkey pending the outcome here based on recent past history of how they are treated there.

Problem is that we need that location for our bases. UNLESS the Kurds give us basing rights in Iraq....Irag gov would be made because the Kurds do not have authority for that...in the eyes of the Iraqi Gov.

Interesting read. Ironically I was wearing a shirt that I picked up in Turkey a few years ago. What little I was able to observe from the soldiers that I met sure looked like 3rd world troops. I still have trouble picturing them as any sort of military power, but I could be wrong.

They are an Old Corps type of military. That was when I saw them during Desert Storm and Display Determination in the 70s...

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - I got to see some of them during Desert Storm as well, maybe we passed by each other!
