The town that gave Russia its name

There's another first. Never heard any part of this story before other than the fact that Norsemen had established trade routes through present day Russia and my wife, an Ashkenazim Jew of Ukrainian descent is one-quarter Nordic. (I now refer to her as my Viking shield maiden)
