The truth about Viking berserkers

During my tour of duty in Vietnam it was my honor to investigate and report four actions that resulted in awards of the Medal of Honor. In one such action, two men became disgusted with their leader's indecision which resulted in their unit being ambushed and trapped in a seemingly hopeless situation. The two acting on their own initiative assaulted the enemy in such a brazen manner that their comrades simply stood and watched them for several minutes before firing in support. To me they resembled the Berserkers of legend. Often I have wondered if Berserkers actually existed, and was delighted to find this scholarly work. In my own novel my hero finds himself in a desperate battle during which he enters a fugue state, after which he has no memory of his actions and refuses an MoH because he doesn't feel he deserves it.
