Providing a haven for refugees is a far different matter than accepting immigrants. Whereas immigrants come seeking a new home and are easily assimilated, refugees are in flight from death and destruction. They don't come to a new land to be assimilated. They come simply to find shelter, a reprieve from death and destruction. While citizens may feel burdened by immigration, they fear the prospect that refugees may bring their conflict with them. Inasmuch as Americans have little trust in their government, it having failed in so many misadventures in recent decades, it is easily argued that their fear is reasonable. Sadly, the government has little credibility when it attempts to placate anxious citizens with promises that the refugees will be vetted so as to eliminate risk when, at the same time, they warn that Americans should not be trusted with firearms because vetting simply doesn't work in ferreting out those who might use guns illegally.
