Had the opportunity to ride a C-5A in 72 twice, overseas in the pacific. You sat facing the rear of the aircraft, and up by the tail section. The load master serve us the meals during the flight.
The first time comming from Calf, we got stuck for 3 days on Wake island, due to hydraulics issue with the landing gears.
Aircraft had a spare engine in the cargo area, but the load master told us, no hydraulic parts.
Stayed in the small enlisted barracks, free meals, and the island only had one bar, most people in the bar were Filipino construction workers.
From one side of the island, you could see the other side, and the ocean. It was nice to stay there, but nothing really to do, some did alittle fishing.
