My book review of The White Donkey by Maxamilian Uriarte.
Can't decide if you want to read The White Donkey? I hope this helps you make up your mind!
The White Donkey is a comic book about Abe and Garcia, two US Marines fresh out of boot camp. Their experiences training with their unit, the disconnect with civilians at home, and roller coaster between boredom and tense situations in Iraq are covered with great realism.
Many war books focus on combat and mission planning, but this book digs into the personal account of a young Marine who doesn't see such regular action and up-front fighting, which is a reality for many service members, especially from 2008-onwards.
This book does contain swear words, so it is not for kids, but I would recommend it for all other audiences--civilian and military alike. It can help bridge the gap in communication between veterans and civilians.
You also notice a generation gap between the salty "old guys" and "new guys." The old guys' simpler but combat-heavy deployments compared to the overly bureaucratic deployments as Iraq calmed down.
