It says something about today's Army that they really think "it couldn't go overseas as currently configured."
Those Lakotas were acquired as drop-in replacements for several hundred National Guard and Reserve Hueys which were still soldiering on just a few years ago. Compared to the Vietnam-claissic UH-1D which many of us remember riding around in (and on), the UH-72A is faster (courtesy of 300 more horsepower), can lift almost as much weight and has the same nominal troop capacity. Of course, it lacks niceties such as self-sealing fuel tanks and door guns, but Eurocopter/Airbus offers those as options which the U.S. Army explicitly refused.
