My father was a professional prize fighter. He had a successful, though very short career. (He decided that he had other options in life.) He entered the ring for the same reason most did. It was the only visible path to escape the life he had inherited. (In my father's case, he was the impoverished son of coal miners.) I suspect that many enter the military with the same hope but, unlike successful prize fighters, find that they haven't really escaped when they leave military service. Thus, it is no surprise to find that many of the best come from a military background.
