My first response, is WTF was he doing using mortars? We are suppose to be "defensive combatants only", hence why we also carry the Geneva Convention Card in addition to our Military ID Card. We carry and M-16 and 9mm pistol for self/patient defense. We aren't trained to use mortars, that's an 11B's job. Obviously he's a kickass kind of guy and should be awarded something, but don't know if it should be the CMH. Also, looking back at other CMH recipients, actually there were numerous medics that were on the list, so I don't think that affects the judgement. Just my 2 cents.

SGT Charles W., combat medics assigned to infantry units (at least in my experience) learn how to use all of the weapons available to them. A significant number of medics that I knew and know loved to see things go boom.

SSG Robert Webster - Very true. The Mark 19 was one of my favorites, but unless there aren't trained infantry available, why would he be doing that rather than his job? Were there any friendly casualties?

SGT Charles W. - There may have been other soldiers available, but considering there were only 23 American soldiers originally (not counting the Afghan soldiers), is this such a great surprise over the time period involved (8 days)?

I know I am late in responding but do have a few words...this is not a conventional war(the war on terrorism). For some time now the Geneva Conventions Card is not worth the paper it is written on. As for "crew-serve weapons" I answered this to another medic during OIF1(2003-04). I would do and fire whatever weapon I was trained on even if it were "familiarization training" for a worse case scenario.

Chances are, yes it was not an MOH or DSC because of him being a Medic. Case in point, I was once put in for an AAM by one of my nurses and it was denied with the statement "Why should he get an AAM for doing his job?" I certainly commend him on his strong bravery and dedication to saving his Soldiers.

Sorry to hear that. I had a SSG that was my NCOIC while we were deployed. I put him in for an MSM for his meritorious service in my eyes. It was decreased to an AAM because he did not lead more than 4 soldiers. He returned and recovered over $2.4 million in surgical supplies and equipment and reprocessed the entire Sterile Services Department upon out arrival. We had a SPC who was Biomed who got an MSM for checking all the hospital equipment (ie. doing his job) I don't have the answers.

MAJ (Join to see) - That's one hell of a downgrade. Damn. And all because he didn't lead more than 4 Soldiers? That some BS right there. Right now, I know my old commander and new commander are thinking of submitting me for an MSM as my time as a Detachment Sergeant (for when my time is done). I started the Det Sgt job when I was a SGT with 3 yrs TIG and about 4 months prior to pinning SSG. Unfortunately, I'm not holding my breath to ever receive it.
