While in the Air Force many years ago I ran into a former AF Academy cadet . He was serving 4 years as a SSgt so there is a commitment to repay when you cross a certain threshold.

I'm not sure if someone who left before two years would get a DD 214, but you're right about the training with Beast Barracks the first summer, then combined arms training the second summer, and postings somewhere in the real army the third summer. My equivalent of your summer '85 cadet, was to spend the summer of '87 at Fort Knox training National Guard recruits; they called me an Assistant Drill Instructor. With the administrative inertia of of West Point and the Army, I ended up with 3 years counted as active duty time, but my only post academy service commitment was IRR. I qualify as a veteran, but have always felt ambivalent about claiming that status since I ended up getting most of my college education on the Army's dime with little actual service. Lessons from the Academy have stayed with me and been useful for my whole life, though.

An individual mightis the driver consider as a vet from what David Stafne has stated, but he would not be considered as a vet with the Veterans Affairs. DD 214 is the driver.

Quick question; I was in AFOTS; chose not to be commissioned and was discharged with a DD-214, and a rank of E3, Honorable Discharge (Still have it in my files). On every employment application I checked no for military service. We’re those statements false? If false, am I a vet? I would never place myself with those who served and I don’t consider myself a veteran. What really is my status. Thank you.

A1C Marty Feehan - To the best of my knowledge, especially in your case, you just might be a Veteran. I understand that if one served at least six months with at least a general under honorable discharge, they are a Veteran. If in a declared war, which has not been since WWII, then it is 91 days. If you meet this criteria, hang your head high as a Veteran. I have also been told that if one has any DD 214, they are a Veteran. Please refer, I believe, US CODE 38, as I am just writing this in out of the blue :)
Since your military service was such a short time, you are probably fine for not mentioning any military service, unless you decide to apply for a job with the federal government, particularly the military, and require a security clearance.

By the way, many great citizens aren't able to complete OCS. There is nothing stopping you from trying again, or simply enlisting into the military. Thanks for the question.
