Tough loss. especially to those in the submarine service. I was on the USS Sperry AS-12, a sub tender, for a year and a half. Anytime a sub reported a problem, at sea, the Sperry got very somber until the boat was safe again. I had already transferred to another ship when the Scorpion went down in 68. That still hit close to home.
Many civilians think the Navy is like being on a vacation cruise. Nothing could be further from teh truth. Besides the loss of the Scorpion, during my four years on active duty, several carriers had major fires with loss of life. Definitely no vacation!
