Not sure how useful USNWR is anymore. A brief look at their methodology shows that actual academic rigor and value of the education have taken a back seat.
Priority now is given to enrolling poor and diverse students, not to faculty quality (percentage of faculty with terminal degree is no longer even considered, and emphasis on original research is diminished), academic standing or achievement (class rank is also completely removed), or quality of materials.
And free speech is not even a thought.
Top five free speech universities in FIRE rankings, with their USNWR rank:
Michigan Tech 151
Auburn 93
University of New Hampshire 115
Oregon State University 142
Florida State University 53
Meanwhile, top 5 USNWR schools, with their FIRE ranking (out of 248)
Princeton 187
MIT 136
Harvard 248
Stanford 207
Yale 234.
Not a single top University in the top half of free speech. Three of them in the bottom 20%.
So Congrats to these three colleges, I guess. If congrats are really in order.
