With as many high risk maneuvers that Jackson and Lee managed to pull off, I'm surprised that he lasted as long as he did. Splitting your forces and starting a battle late in the day in a wooded area where no one was sure where the line of contract was at would have cost him more than the loss of a commander if he had faced an aggressive Union Commander.
