Brother versus brother didn't originate with the American Civil War and nor did it end there. As I listen to the self-righteous comments from all sides following the demonstrations/riots in Washington on 6 January 2021, my favorite voice is the one shouting "This isn't what America is about." Well, actually it is. While most focus on the Founders/Founding Fathers (again, choose you favorite), I suggest that you revisit the story of the Sons and Daughters of Liberty. The Founders were the intellectual leadership of the American Revolution, the Sons and Daughters of Liberty were the ones who got their hands dirty. Without either, the American Revolution would never have succeeded. While you're at it, study the history of the Tories and their role in the American Revolution. Rarely mentioned, military units comprised of Tories fought some of the bloodiest battles against the Rebels. It will be interesting to see who attempts to claim the legacy of the Rebels and the Sons and Daughters of Liberty to justify their roles in the current strife.
