The downfall was when manual labor jobs started plummeting and required you to be in a college and not at a the school. Men don't know how to get there hands dirty. They know how to be behind a desk.

It has been happening for decades. It is not new it is just now coming to a more full revelation. This is what happens when affluence and decadence overtakes a civilization.
It is all fun and games until the barbarians are at the gates and the girly men need protection from the genuine articles. We just have to hope there are enough of the real thing around to do the job.
