Generally: plan ahead and the prepare
Financially, emotionally, mentally and physically
Be realistic. Have a plan A, plan B and at least one, if all else fails.
Talk to everyone. Tell them you are transiting and what you're looking for. You never know where your job lead will come from

So true, on first retirement from active duty to contractor....I was slipping resumes under the HR people's closed doors at a job fair at a hotel since I got there late. One HR person came running out because I used the word HUMINT and they had a request that day....and had never heard of it. That was a good 2 year job until I went to Civ Service.
