Why is there still a NATO? It serves no other purpose than to defend against Soviet aggression. (Oh right, that's not a thing anymore, is it?) And now it just stands as a threat to Russia which inspires them to behave badly. NATO should have been torn down along with the Berlin Wall

I read an article back in the late 90's about the foreign service fiefdoms in existence in the US Military. Commands with unlimited funds, no overheads, etc. And none of those people want to give up their chateau's and palaces and go back to the States and sit in a soul-less building and have people chasing every dime you earn/spend. So a lot of these people have made jobs for themselves and have even gone so far as to convince the host nation that they themselves are the very thread holding the nation's fabric together.
