I live in a small town destroyed over fifty years by the combined influences of the Interstate, the Department Store, and finally the online market...so in principle, I "get" what the President is thinking. However, the ship has sailed, and I'm not entirely behind this move.

The solution to rebuilding "Main Street" isn't in combating online or franchise sales, but in reducing regulations, taxes and other risks for small "brick and mortar" businesses offering goods and services not practically offered by the "Big Boys".

For example, in my town, more than 2/3rds of the available retail space is abandoned and can be bought for under $50k...but to meet state, municipal and federal codes, obtain licensing, and comply with other regulations makes it financially infeasible for most "start ups" to take hold.

Although I detest Jeff Bezos politics, he has a state of the art business model. Best or equal pricing and easily world class customer service. Delivered to your home in two business days, if you subscribe to Prime. And an unbeatable inventory. We are responsible for their success. I always try to use local businesses, but with limited success. When I think of how much I spent at Sears over the years and now seldom shop there due to policy changes and merchandise.

I always heard and believed it was the 'big box' stores like WalMart, Target, etc which resulted in loss of business and closing smaller independents in smaller towns everywhere. Now it appears that the shoe is on the other foot with the intenet forcing the closure/distress to the 'big boxes'. Why fight the crowds at Walmart or Costco when you can get the same thing on line delivered to your door? No one knows.
