Per the article: "The briefing included a section, in all caps, stating: “DO NOT CONGRATULATE” the Russian president on his reelection." However, they say absolutely nothing about how they supposedly know this. No source mentioned. It's Slate, so there's no reason to believe they didn't just make it up.

MSgt Steve Sweeney - Congratulating Putin was the diplomatic thing to do, and therefore the obvious thing to do. Besides, the issue is not as you say "if someone told him to or not" -- Trump is still the President, and therefore it's his decision, not the decision of someone (how many levels?) under him.

Why? Putin has been in office for 24 years. 6 years ago, BHO congratulated him on his win and 6 years before that GWB and 6 years before that as well and Clinton when he won the first time. Our "leaders" have always known that Putin was former KGB, they have always known he wants to rebuild the USSR. Just because he congratulated him doesn't mean he's "sucking up". It's called diplomacy. We don't know what was actually said and since we are not privy to his actual security briefing we don't know what it actually said. Either way, only those on the FAR left see a real issue here. It's no different then the captain of a winning team telling the captain of the losing team "Nice game".

MSgt Steve Sweeney - Yeah, and Obama didn't do a goddamned thing about any of it until after Trump was already elected. Using Obama as a model, Trump has another 6-7 years to actually do anything. It will be interesting to see, though, if Trump says anything directly to the Russian government about having more flexibility after his reelection.
