As a clinician all injuries to the brain are serious. former combat vets I've interviewed present w/ degrees of TBI, in time SUD, complex PTSD, and compacted grief. All of these injuries need quick attention.

The V.A. in reviews of TBI claims from prior wars definitely do not agree with the presence of TBI symptoms after a time.

Trump, “But I would say, and I can report, that it is not very serious.” That's pretty subjective. I only got shot in the head four times in Viet Nam, but nothing serious.

SGT Robert Pryor - Based on 4 yrs. of clinical research on combat trauma dating back to Korea, you are very fortunate to recover. Based on my interviews w/ combat vets, many continue to struggle. If interested in copies of my research, you can reach me " [login to see] .

SSgt Richard Kensinger - Having been intimately involved in TBI for all these years, one unscientific thing I've learned is our knowledge is woefully inadequate. I participated in the Viet Nam Head Injury Study and what was obvious to the clinicians with whom I dealt was that for some unknown reason one soldier could survive horrendous multiple head wounds, when the next soldier only got a relatively small wound and wound up graveyard dead. All my buddies from Viet Nam couldn't believe I survived to sun-up, much less over fifty years . As my buddy SSG Mike Parks once said, when they threw me on the medivac my brains were hanging out and I wasn't going to make it. I broke the bad news to Mike, none of us are going to make it out of this existence alive. My only struggle was VA telling me what I couldn't do because of my wounds, rather than focusing on what I actually could do. I'm no sissy la-la and I'm no victim. That all changed in 2007 when I was finally assigned a primary care physician who only focused on what I coud do. At age 58 she told me I had the body of a 20 year old athlete -- no mention of being a disabled vet. I was there to have a physician sign my Advanced Open Water certification SCUBA medical form. She actually acted like a groupie because how I did not let any of my wounds affect my life. It was as if a huge bruden was lifted from my shoulders. But all things considered, I still take the money -- my moma raised a fool or two, but I wasn't one of them.

I’m sure that getting shot in the head four times would be one of the other, more serious injuries that were generally referred to when he said “...relative to other injuries he’s seen.” Thank you for your dedicated service, sir.

SrA Jared Hall - I read the following in the Military Times "In fact, per Pentagon nomenclature, the mild traumatic brain injuries those service members sustained are considered “not serious.” The injury reporting system has three levels, Gen. Mark Milley, the Joint Chiefs chairman, said Thursday: Very serious, serious and not serious. Mild TBI falls under the last category." Trump repeated information based on that rating system, before everyone was fully examined, or even realized they were having symptoms, because the public wanted information. Then folks jumped on it as an opportunity to bash him. By the time I came out of my comma, I was doing fine by my estimation so I have always considered mine as "not serious." I was shocked to see all my brain damage when I got my first CT scan years later.

The point of the question was to challenge the President on his claim their were no casualties from the Iranian missile strike as he worked to de-escalate the issue with Iran. He wasn't aware at the time he made the claim that several people eventually were admitted for concussions.
If you want to criticize him for calling this injury not very serious, so be it, but I have to ask why? There are several people in the military today who will agree with him. Is your point to additionally criticize him for not striking back (since US military members were injured)? Is the point to make him sound weak on the issue? If not, what's the point? Is he attempting to deny them of getting awarded Purple Hearts?
Personally, I do think a concussion is a serious injury and thus I disagree with the President. But I see the true motivation behind the media's need to report it, in their effort to criticize the President. Additionally, I see the President's position in trying to de-escalate with Iran, to put the US on the higher ground, and to paint Iran in not only a bad light, but to ridicule the incompetence of their military. This is another attempt to nit pick.

"Asked Wednesday if he considers potential traumatic brain injuries to be “serious,” Trump suggested he did not and urged Jang to follow up with the Defense Department because he was only told about the injuries “numerous days later.”
“I don’t consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries that I’ve seen,” the president said. “I’ve seen what Iran has done with their roadside bombs to our troops. I’ve seen people with no legs and no arms. ... I can consider them to be really bad injuries. No, I do not consider that to be bad injuries.” WaPo

And this reinforces my point. The President has a different perspective based on the people he's met who have been seriously injured in combat. He's entitled to his opinion and I really don't see the need to argue over the degree of what some people consider more serious than others. The hidden agenda I see here is more to criticize the President (again), make it sound like he doesn't care or that he lies, and for what reason? Do we want him to change his position and escalate with Iran as a response to injuring several American military members? Is that what we're getting at? Or are people trying to play either side by making the claim "see the President is just as chicken as President Obama was with his line in the sand in Syria."? Either way, President Trump is going to be criticized here despite the fact he did the right thing by killing an enabler of terrorists and keeping Iran in check while not getting baited into war without enough provocation.
