I oppose the idea of a gas tax. However, I'm not opposed to a user fee. If the proceeds from the gas tax were to go 100% toward road maintenance and construction, I'm OK with it.

You can never be completely fair to everyone. Railroads complain about the Diesel Tax because their argument is it is helping to subsidize their competition in the Trucking Industry. Saudis complain about the gas tax because they say it is a tarriff on import of Saudi Oil and lowers demand. AAA complains about the gas tax because they say Trucks still are not paying their fair share. Amtrak complains about the gas tax because it says it has no permanent source of funding like the Interstate freeway system does.

SPC Erich Guenther - Well then, perhaps I should have been a tad more specific. I'd advocate that 100% of the tax collected at roadside stations for gasoline and diesel go toward road maintenance. If that same tax is collected when trains fill up with diesel, then that money should go for track maintenance. Tax money from aircraft fuel should go toward runway maintenance, and tax money from fuel for watercraft should go for harbor maintenance. That's assuming all of those fuel purchase points collect the same tax -- I don't know if that's true or not.

But I'm seriously not worried about the Saudis. At all.
