So NYT has its perspective...and I have mine. Let's really consider what could happen between the US and North Korea and whether the number of innocent people that would suffer on both sides is really going to make this world a safer, better place to live. So options are:
1) Action: NKorea conducts a physical attack on US military forces anywhere we are spread across the globe. US reacts with equal or greater force back at NKorean military forces.
Effect: Both countries, plus allies on each side, are now in an armed conflict IOT break the will of the other. A conflict that will likely include death of innocent people, thousands of refugees fleeing N Korea if they can, and a humanitarian issue like we see as the Iraq/Syria conflict continues.
2) Action: NKorea joins forces with its allies to conduct a multilateral attack on the US and some of its allies, resulting in US and allied counterattack that results in mass casualties, death, destruction and instability globally. Instability to the global economy, food and shelter insecurity for thousands, and an end to the carefree lifestyle many in the US live today.
Effect: No one is a winner just like option #1. All countries involved will likely lose innocent people.
3) Recent UN sanctions against NKorea thrust the country into dire food insecurity and further poverty, resulting in further unrest and suffering for the innocent NKoreans not supporting the government.
Effect: Creation of more enemies of the US who may begin to sympathize with the NKorean govt bc of the human suffering. Or, NKorea decides comply with the UN sanctions.
4) US and NKorea stop threatening each other and instead realize that just like when we were children, we can agree to disagree. They choose the righteous path, the mature path of working through their problems in a civil, dignified way that results in both countries people being protected from indiscriminate pain and suffering.
Effect: NKorea and the US negotiate a deal that includes the US agreement to stop bullying NKorea and NKorea agrees to not attack the US or its allies. Also, UN lifts some of the sanctions and works to improve the economic stability and opportunities for the NKorean people.
I personally like option 4 and think it would go down as a monumental humanitarian victory in history if both leaders chose non-violence.
