Turkey is a thorn in the side of the US, Kurds, and a threat to stability in the Middle East. It is no secret that Turkey has been helping ISIS, and that they are using the fight against ISIS in Syria as an excuse to target the Kurds. In my opinion, Erdogan released the locations and other sensitive information about US troops because of our relations with the Syrian Kurds. The US, and NATO need to seriously rethink their relationship with Turkey. Erdogan is taking Turkey back to the days of the Ottoman Empire, and I suspect he wants to revive the empire.
The situation with the Kurds and their pursuit of independence could present an opportunity for the US to punish the Turks by moving their bases and operations into Kurdish held territory. I know Kurdish independence is still questionable, but the signs are there that it could happen. There are still too many variables to know for certain how everything is going to play out, but the US should keep the Kurdish option open. Even after all the times the US and western powers have stabbed the Kurds in the back, they have still been our most consistent ally, supporter, and if it had not been for them, ISIS would have owned most of Iraq, and all of Northern Syria.
Turkey has been playing all ends against the middle. I think we would be wise to follow Germany's lead and find a different area for our base in Turkey.

SSgt (Join to see) Not sure why this surprises anyone. There has been a trend toward a secular state in Turkey since Erdogan came to power. Along with this is a trend away from the U.S. The Turks have always merely tolerated our presence as long as there is something in it for Turkey. They have always made things extraordinarily difficult for us. The fact that they hate the kurds is not new. The entire musllim world hates the kurds. They have short memories. Historically the kurds have always bailed islam out as far back as the first crusades. However the situation is complicated by the fact that the kurds want a country of their own and they want it carved out of mostly Turkish territory with a little from iraq and a little from syria. We, the U.S. have strategic goals tat require Turkish cooperation. This game of cat and mouse diplomacy is not new, nor is it going away anytime soon.
