Has any nation ever truly understood or employed diplomacy successfully. Even the British and French are best remembered for their legendary failures than any brief success they might have enjoyed. Ultimately, the world bows only to the will of the one with the biggest stick, and then only begrudgingly. I suspect that the the world breathes easier because the US holds that stick, but ultimately resents us for it regardless of how we may wield it
