Don't get me wrong, I love Florida and MacDill AFB. However, when Congress and budgets override operational effectiveness in choosing a southern base over a northern one, I have a hard time with it. Does anyone know why the vast majority of KC-135s were originally stationed at north-of-Kansas bases? It is because the shortest great circle route to Russia and China, are over or near the North pole. If we want to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent based on the triad of ICBMs, SLBMs, and bombers, we need to be able to get those bombers over their target area.
